Prerequisite: a component was created.

  1. Right-click on a component in the BOM editor.

  2. Choose New → Failure Mode. - Outcome: the dialog "New Failure Mode" will open.

  3. Enter a Name (required), and (optionally) a Description and/or a Split value.

  4. Click on Finish.

Outcome: you will have a new failure mode.

The distribution (in percent) for the failure mode is used for calculating the failure rate for this failure
mode to occur for this type of element. The sum of all possible failure modes for an element's type
must be equal to 1.

If the sum of failure mode distribution is not equal to 1, SOX will issue a warning. The screenshot above demonstrates this behavior.
