Excel Data Import

About the SOX BOM template:

With the SOX BOM template you can exchange data between SOX and Microsoft Excel. You can download the SOX BOM template at the EnCo template section at the Welcome Screen or from the download center. [http://www.enco-software.com/download-site/] It is available for the norms IEC62380 and SN29500.

Description of the structure of the BOM template:

The BOM template for Excel has a structure that SOX will recognize. Do not change the structure. However, you can add or change information right in Excel. For example, you can add components in the sheet “BOM”. Later when you import the Excel file into SOX2, these changes will be applied in SOX.

The Excel file:
The first sheet in the Excel file („BOM Master File Data“) contains the master file data or meta data
about the BOM file. The second sheet (“BOM”) contains the current bill of materials:

The third sheet lists the modules. The forth contains all the component types in the norm. The sheet
"Failure Modes" lists the failure modes with ID, name and split (%). The sixth contains the temperature
profiles. Sheet #7 provides a listing of the types used. For the norm IEC62380 there also is a sheet for mission profiles.

Importing data from Excel:

Prerequisites: a BOM document was created and opened. The content to be imported is available as
an Excel file compliant with the Excel template provided by EnCo Software.

  1. Open the File menu.

  2. Choose Import > BOM Import. - Outcome: the BOM import wizard will open.

  3. For the import to succeed, a file formatted according to one of the two templates indicated is required. Only if you have such a file prepared should you use the Browse... button to navigate to your target file. In all other scenarios, you should start the process by opening a template, which you edit and export as required. The resultant file will then be available for re-import by any SOX user. Any attempt to import an Excel file whose formatting does not match one of the templates is liable to fail, with SOX reporting an error of this general form:

  4. We demonstrate the following steps premised on opening the SN29500 template in the first instance.

  5. After clicking on the button highlighted above, you will need to locate and open a file named “BOM_SN29500_Import_With_Mapping.xlsx”. We placed a copy of it in the “Documents” folder for simplicity’s sake. - Outcome: the import dialog will register this selection and prompt you for the next step.

  6. Click on Next. - Outcome: the "Select options" dialog will open.

  7. Make selections to suit your use case.

  8. Click Next. - Outcome: you may be shown a message as suggested below:

  9. Acknowledge the message by clicking Next or Finish. - Outcome: if you clicked on Next, the dialog "Mapping of imported elements" will open.

  10. Click on Finish.

Outcome: a BOM was imported and added to the repository.

An alternative import path uses the Specific BOM Import option.

This selection will open a slightly different “import” dialog from the one above, which does not include the templates involved previously:

Once again, a suitably formatted import file is required for the process to succeed. SOX will reject any other file:

Otherwise, the logic is identical to the previous example.
